Michael Perlmutter is an author come back to life. What I mean by that is it’s been years since I’ve used the word Playwright on an IRS 1040 form. I graduated in 1981 from California Institute of the Arts in, what was then Valencia but now, Santa Clarita, California with a BFA in Theatre. There was no writing program at that time, though myself and Mr. Gill Dennis (instructor/screenwriter) pioneered what would come to be as close as we could. My play GLASS HOUSES was offered in the Los Angeles Repertory company performances the same year as I graduated.
In 1983 I won a Drama-Logue award for outstanding writing for the CRIMSON.
In 1984/85 I was commissioned for and wrote the screenplay for DAVID’S STORY for Arnold Laven of Levy-Gardner-Laven productions (unproduced.)
In 1986 my son, Joshua, was born. That same year there were two productions in process, one in LA, one in New York which both folded early due to separate Producer decisions. And my son had just been born.
Having been the product of “and my family is a luxury my career can afford me when I’m not working”, I chose to set down my pen and focus on other priorities with plans to pick up my electric IBM typewriter after my children were grown. The twins were born in 1988. It is now 2012 and my youngest are twenty-three. Even though due to these ecenomically brutal times my children atre each back living with us (and the same wife for thirty-four years) I have returned to my writing and am ready to re-pursue the trail.
My mind has not been shut down the last twenty odd years, only my pen. The ink well is very full.
