About the author

Michael Perlmutter is an author come back to life.   What I mean by that is it’s been years since I’ve used the word Playwright on an IRS 1040 form.   I graduated in 1981 from California Institute of the Arts in, what was then Valencia but now, Santa Clarita, California with a BFA in Theatre.  There was no writing program at that time, though myself and Mr. Gill Dennis (instructor/screenwriter) pioneered what would come to be as close as we could.  My play GLASS HOUSES was offered in the Los Angeles Repertory company performances the same year as I graduated.

In 1983 I won a Drama-Logue award for outstanding writing for the CRIMSON.

In 1984/85 I was commissioned for and wrote the screenplay for DAVID’S STORY for Arnold Laven of Levy-Gardner-Laven productions (unproduced.)

In 1986 my son, Joshua, was born.  That same year there were two productions in process, one in LA, one in New York which both folded early due to separate Producer decisions.  And my son had just been born.

Having been the product of “and my family is a luxury my career can afford me when I’m not working”, I chose to set down my pen and focus on other priorities with plans to pick up my electric IBM typewriter  after my children were grown.  The twins were born in 1988.  It is now 2012 and my youngest are twenty-three.  Even though due to these ecenomically brutal times my children atre each back living with us (and the same wife for thirty-four years) I have returned to my writing and am ready to re-pursue the trail.

My mind has not been shut down the last twenty odd years, only my pen.  The ink well is very full.

Other plays written this side of sabbatical include:

1865   *   A SHEPHERD’S STORY   *   MY PERFECT ALIBI   *   RANDOM ACTS    *   IN THERAPY

AN AMERICAN CHRISTMAS

ten minute (or under pieces) include:

Hello Michael, sorry I haven’t been in touch earlier. Had a very busy week and also decided to get away to Catalina for a break so now it’s Sunday – how did that happen? Great to meet you and maybe we could get together on Tuesday or Wednesday for a coffee. Give me a call when you get a chance. Have a great 4th. All the best.

Where are you, dear man. I’d love to talk with you.

  3. Hello Michael. I saw your note on Linked in and read the first ten pages of Directing Hamlet. I have a theater company in Chicago and we are always looking for new works. (check us out at http://www.genesistheatricals.com) I would be interested in seeing the whole script of Directing Hamlet and also of 1865. I can’t promise anything but they look interesting. Elayne

Dear Michael, I have been looking at your website and interesting in your play ‘Directing Hamlet’ for a possible staged reading in July as part of the Vicious Salon run by heartBeast – vicious theatre ensemble, in Brisbane, Australia. However I would like to read the entire script and show a couple of other members of the theatre company, who have been discussing Hamlet a lot lately. One of them is an older woman and the other a 19 year old male actor.

I did part of my theatre training in America in the late 90s on a Fulbright Fellowship in Directing at Carnegie Mellon U. Great times and wonderful memories.

    cheers,

    Michael
